Secret Garden at Historic Oakdene!

It's not often that we get the opportunity to capture such a grand piece of Staunton, VA history. We always love working with Jenny Mitchell and Beverly Stermer at Nest Realty Shenandoah because they ALWAYS bring us the most amazing homes, and prepare the homes for pictures. This home was already meticulous! The owners have lived here for over 20 years...they have had their babies married on the grounds, and many memories have been made here.

The owners have done a stunning job with RESTORING this home. Every detail was maintained and brought back to new life. This was not a fast and quick restoration, but a slow and lovingly done restoration.

One of our favorite parts of this home was the land surrounding it. The day we came to photograph this home, it was on the Garden Tour 2019 and no wonder why! The yard is just immaculate with every spot touched by hands of an angel! From the award winning potting shed, to the curving rock walls, lanterns, rock steps, swing in the front tree, multiple patios awaiting morning coffee...the yard is just a secret garden!

Check out the video walk through below, and then see more from the photography session with some insight into the secrets of the home from the owner himself! Unforgettable!

Full listing HERE!

Welcome to Oakdene!

This is the view from the upstairs porch overlooking the back patio, carport, and manicured yard where the band sat during their daughter's wedding.

Gorgeous pergola with a water fountain and surrounding brick wall

We couldn't get enough of that picturesque window and the painted concrete back patio. The pattern of the concrete matches the floor pattern found in the basement!

Is this not the cutest potting shed?? Love the antique door and door knob and of course window boxes!!

The gorgeous front door with mail slot...

Love the textures and pattern! This is in the front foyer as you come in the front door.

These were found throughout the home. These were specifically for the maid of the home where people could buzz and request through the speaker. The main panel is in the "attic" where the maid would reside unless needed or working.

The butler's pantry with seating!

Of course there is an elevator!

Our favorite, the library! Check out all the original woodwork!

The half bath on the main floor under the stairs with a moving window

These doors were found in two of the upstairs bedrooms with access to the porch. You open the window first and then the bottom doors pop open.

This is the porch found off of the library!

Welcome to the "attic"!

All the windows have been stripped down to their original wood, and the hardware has been restored! They are all in working order, and even numbered.

Who doesn't love a claw foot tub??

Wood door knobs....**sigh**

Want to go to the lookout? This secret pathway takes you to the view of the owl found on the roof!

Yo can climb up and stand on the edges to lookout upon Staunton!

The maid's call system panel in the attic.

Now you are walking down the steps to the basement. These are the original dry cells for the maid's buzzer system. Still intact with the directions/paperwork found on the door!

The woodworking area of the basement!

This is the original markings from when the concrete floor was put down (1892)

Welcome to the wine cellar (our second favorite part of the home!) The windows were covered with copper to prevent light from entering the wine cellar.

Watch the walk through video to see this secret door in working motion! We won't tell where the switch is to open it!

Thank you, Jenny and Beverly for inviting us out to capture this home. It was one of the best days of our life, and we are forever grateful.
